Really interesting: She said when she first started campaigning some of the older women didn't get behind her. But once she ran into trouble with the media they flocked to her side. Why doesn't anyone see that daughters learn disrespect systematically when men still dominate information production systems and the same things are still happening? Why do people think that women going to work for, now, a second job (unless one affords a 'woman' to nanny, clean, etc)changed the disrespect of mothers? It didn't. In many ways, it reinforced disrespect of mothers. And where I live mothers are still getting blamed, double messages and silenced. I can't speak for others lives, but I know that those who are 'content' in the system, in their lives are no different than the women that were 'content' in every generation. There is so much to learn and so much fiction about women's lives. Daughters see it and blame the 'women'. Is anything new?karendeehttp://culturalenvironmentalism.spaces.live.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2200669326669138986.post-1601913844809898472010-10-13T19:09:20.255-04:002010-10-13T19:09:20.255-04:00Very good points, Marj!! The concerns I have are by and large the same as the concerns of younger feminists, although we use different words: sex and sexuality, racism, jobs, opportunities, leadership, feminist ways of acting and leading in the world, equality.

Does this whole uproar over a generational divide boil down to whether we all are on facebook and twitter? Is that worth abandoning a movement we've built?

I've seen older feminists diss (and disrespect) younger feminist - it's disgusting. But it's a personal and personality issue - not a reason to abandon a movement.Marj in Arlingtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15739703887073628073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2200669326669138986.post-3424452013668147732010-10-09T10:08:49.565-04:002010-10-09T10:08:49.565-04:00I guess generational tensions are just part of lif...I guess generational tensions are just part of life.

However, there are many younger and older feminists who are working together. This week in Philly we had a joint NOW/CLUW event with a wonderful group of women of all ages who are committed to working together to advance a feminist agenda.Karenhttp://www.gmail.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2200669326669138986.post-62177145250770345522010-10-07T11:03:29.793-04:002010-10-07T11:03:29.793-04:00Young women begin to define themselves at an early...Young women begin to define themselves at an early age by discovering and then insisting upon the ways they are NOT LIKE THEIR MOTHER. This seems to be a necessary differentiating step in cultures where each woman is expected to be the head of her own nuclear household.

I think you were wise to recognize that developmental necessity and prepare to mentor, rather than lead. Your analogy to the wider job market in America is apt: this is their planet now and they are inheriting a daunting job; with our still-significant energies, we should be asking how we can serve. Personally, I've probably topped out technologically at the cell phone/iPod/Kindle/Facebook stage.Nancehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15166865250789996825noreply@blogger.com
